2 minutes with… A Story

Have you ever wondered what would happen if your favourite authors wrote a story together? We’re going to try and find out. 2 minutes with… is a new weekly column here at Dublin Book Festival. Every week, we’ll ask another author 2 questions and ask them to add their lines to our growing story. This is that story. 

His breathing had quickened and his heart beat loudly. He looked around the room terrified someone would sense his terror, his excitement. This discovery would be the making of his career. He looked back at the cells under the microscope. This would change the world forever, but would it be for the better?

He had managed to create the first ever life form just using chemicals. A living cell that could divide and keep on dividing. The possibilities were endless! These cells could be engineered to do all kinds of things, like make new medicines, or be used to fix a broken spinal cord. And no ethical things to worry about, like playing God.  And yet in the back of his mind he wondered.  What if he were to be accused of playing god? Would his life be in danger? And what if someone evil stole what he had discovered? He reached for the poison…

…he kept on his shelf – he couldn’t afford to keep it so far away, not now, not after his breakthrough. It would have to stay on his person. He didn’t want to have to use it, but his experiment had to come above all else. He had to protect it from…
