Strange Types & Odd Sorts: A peek into the world of print in Ireland, a collaboration between the National Print Museum and Fighting Words, documents the stories of retired printers and compositors and their experiences in a world of printing now far removed from today’s. To celebrate the launch of the book’s second edition, join some of the authors at the Museum for readings, stories and demonstrations of the Museum’s collection.

The Chapel is the collective term for members of a print union. At the National Print Museum, the term specifically refers to the group of active retired printers, compositors and finishes that are dedicated to preserving the craft of letterpress printing at the Museum. Some of these volunteers worked with a team of Fighting Words mentors to document memories of lives lived in apprenticeships, jobbing houses, newspapers, binderies and a now utterly transformed world of printing. The sessions were full of laughter, shared reminiscences and a strong desire to document their working lives so that they would be preserved for future generations. Their stories of the industry have always been a highlight of live demonstrations and video projects. Now, they are finally set down in print to be shared near and far.
