The Murder One Festival invites you to celebrate the ever-expanding Irish crime scene with this panel discussion. ‘Killing for a Living’ features some of Ireland’s top authors who launched in lockdown, including creator of the Inishowen Mysteries Andrea Carter; Liz Nugent author of award-winning Lying in Wait (Gallery/Scout Press) and Our Little Cruelties (Penguin Ireland); New York Times bestseller Brian McGilloway; and Sunday Times bestselling, multi-award winning, author of the Maeve Kerrigan series, Jane Casey. This lively discussion will be exploring their opening pages, what makes their characters tick, and the challenges of the genre, whether it’s a series or standalone. This event will be chaired by Catherine Ryan Howard, internationally bestselling crime writer from Cork who has been shortlisted for the Edgar Award for Best Novel, the CWA John Creasey/New Blood Dagger Award and Irish Crime Novel of the Year. Jane Casey is the author of the Maeve Kerrigan series. Twice a winner of Crime Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards, she has also won the Mary Higgins Clark Award for The Stranger You Know, and has been shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library Award. She is a top ten Sunday Times bestselling author.
Andrea Carter studied law at Trinity College Dublin and practised as both a solicitor and barrister before turning to write crime novels. She is the author of the Inishowen Mysteries.which will shortly be adapted for television. The Body Falls was published in April. The Sunday Times has said ‘Carter excels in re-creating the cloistered, gossipy confines of a small Irish village…the Inishowen peninsula community where everybody knows everybody else’s business is a fine stand-in for the mannered drawing room society of a Christie mystery’.
Liz Nugent is the writer of number 1 bestselling novels Unravelling Oliver (2014), Lying in Wait (2016), Skin Deep (2018) and Our Little Cruelties (2020). Her first three books have won multiple Irish Book Awards. All four have also been optioned for screen adaptations. Liz’s books have been translated into 16 languages.
Brian McGilloway is the New York Times bestselling author of ten crime novels. He was born in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1974 and currently works as an English teacher in Strabane, where he also lives with his wife and four children.
Catherine Ryan Howard
Catherine Ryan Howard is an internationally bestselling crime writer from Cork who has been shortlisted for the Edgar Award for Best Novel, the CWA John Creasey/New Blood Dagger Award and Irish Crime Novel of the Year.
