The National Library was founded in 1877. The Main Building was designed by Thomas Deane & Son and opened in 1890. The NLI sits on Kildare Street, surrounded by other cultural institutions and various businesses.
Wheelchair access to the main NLI building is via a ramp from the main entrance on Kildare Street. The entrance doors leading into the main building are automated, controlled by an access button.
There are wheelchair parking bays approximately 100m away on Molesworth Street.

Events are held in the Joly Lecture Theatre, which is through the doorway to the right upon entering the Main Hall. This space is also wheelchair accessible. Seating is theatre style with an approximate capacity of up to 94 guests. The front row is accessible for wheelchair users.
Universal access toilets are located on the ground floor off the front hall.
Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome.
To assist visitors with a hearing impairment, hearing loops are installed throughout the buildings.
The NLI is proud to offer a JAM Card friendly environment.
There are free lockers outside of the Joly Theatre where you can store backpacks and belongings should you choose. The instructions are labelled on the locker.
