What does it mean to create, remember and resist as Indigenous artists in Europe today? 

Join award-winning Irish Traveller writer and curator Oein DeBhairduin and Swedish Sámi writer, editor and activist Patricia Fjellgren for a thought-provoking conversation exploring identity, storytelling, and resilience. This event forms part of Thinking Aloud, Thinking Together, a series of cross-disciplinary conversations curated by Skein.  

Oein DeBhairduin is a writer, activist and educator with a passion for preserving the beauty of Traveller tales, sayings, retellings and historic exchanges. Oein is the author of the award-winning Why the moon travels. His other works are Weave, The Slug and the Snail and Twiggy Woman. He is the Curator of Traveller Culture with the National Museum of Ireland and seeks to pair community activism with cultural celebration, recalling old tales with fresh modern connections and, most of all, he wishes to rekindle the hearth fires of a shared kinship.

Patricia Fjellgren is a translator, writer, project leader, and cultural worker with Northern and Southern Sámi heritage. She writes essays and literary texts while devoting much of her career to Sámi language revitalisation through literary, cultural, and language education projects. She received the Swedish Language Council’s Minority Language Prize in 2017. She is the director of the short fiction film Ulda and the TV series Goavkut, both based on traditional Sámi storytelling, one of the initiators of Gïellačïrkuš / Language Circus at Giron Sámi Teáhter, and served as a commissioner on Sweden’s Truth Commission for the Sámi People.
