Charlotte Elizabeth ‘L’ McManus (1853–1944) is best remembered today for The Professor in Erin, which was originally serialised in Arthur Griffith’s Sinn Féin Weekly in 1912. A nationalist and a member of the Gaelic League, she is also known for her patriotic historical novels. She also helped to establish the second branch of the Gaelic League in Mayo, and was a member of the Irish Literary Society.
