Walking Tours at DBF24
Published 23/09/2024
We love to bring our authors, their books and our audiences into the outdoors, and our walking tours remain some of our most popular events each year. Read on to see how you can discover new authors and their wonderful books while exploring Dublin, in this year’s walks that bring you through Dublin’s streets, gardens and even cemeteries.
On Thursday November 7th, join Rachel McKenna on an engaging walk around the Iveagh Gardens, based on her illuminating Irish nature diary, Step into Nature, which celebrates the everyday flora and fauna around us. Book Here.
On Friday November 8th, join Fiann Ó Nualláin on a mindful walk around the Iveagh Gardens, based on his book 52 Proverbs to Fight Depression and Trauma, which combines the wisdom of Irish proverbs with contemporary approaches to wellbeing. Explore practical techniques in mindfulness, positive psychology, and cognitive behavioural therapy. Book Here.
You can also head out of the city centre to Glasnevin Cemetery where Warren Farrell will take you on a captivating walk while telling you about some of the lesser known, intriguing and sometimes unbelievable stories of those resting there, as revealed in his book So Once Was I: Forgotten Tales from Glasnevin Cemetery. Book Here.
On Saturday November 9th, Dara Kavanagh (aka writer, poet and playwright David Butler) will lead you on a walk based on his gripping novel Jabberwock, a story in which language runs riot and in which his protagonist plays a cat-and-mouse game of pursuit with spies, informers and undercover police. Together with readings from the book, expect a generous mixture of history, topography, and local lore every bit as dubious as the footnotes and asides in which the novel glories. Book Here.
On Sunday 10th November we’re bringing you a diverse mix of great walks to choose from.
Out in the beautiful National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, join Brother Richard in the morning for a calming, meditative and replenishing walk based on his book Calming the Storms, which gives us the tools we need to sustain a nourishing meditative practice amidst the busyness and anxieties of modern life. Book Here (tour now booked out with waitlist in place)
That afternoon, join poet Michael Dooley on a walk of the gardens as he reads from his new collection, In Spring We Turned to Water, a visually striking and distinctly sounded collection of poems that emerge from a liminal terrain tightly charged with folklores and heritages, water bodies, outsiders, and wild creatures. Book Here.
Returning to the city, step back in time with Professor of Medieval Irish History at Trinity College Dublin, Seán Duffy, as he leads a captivating walk inspired by the 20 volumes in the Medieval Dublin series that he has edited for Four Courts Press. Book Here (tour now booked out with waitlist in place).
Last but not least, join Pat Liddy or one of his expert tour guides for a captivating literary tour of Dublin, learning about some of the most famous writers associated with Dublin and taking in iconic landmarks as you go. Various walks available mornings and afternoons from Thursday November 7th to Sunday 10th. Book Here.
